WDPS - meetings & competitions (page content revised 12 May 2008)
The WDPS have a mixture of competition nights and talks over the winter season. We therefore offer a balance between competitive photography and the social side.
Our competitions are structured in order to provide categories for the novice and expert alike and therefore to be inclusive rather than exclusive and elitist. The competions we currently run are:-
- A league of 6 rounds. The format of the monthly league competition was revised at the 2008 AGM and this section is therefore work in progress,.
- TBC - Slides (Amended rules for 2008 - to be added soon)
- TBC -Mounted (Large) Prints. A category mainly for the medium to advanced photographer. (Former A and B split removed at 2008 AGM).. (Amended rules for 2008 - to be added soon)
- Unmounted (Small) Prints. This category is for prints of up to 7 x 5 inches.
- In all league classes including the unmounted print section, cropping, manipulation, enlarging and home/digital processing is permitted.
- TBC - Photographer of the year. (Amended rules for 2008 - to be added soon)
- A nature competition - 2 categories (prints & Slides) with a cup for each. NB This is a nature competition not a natural history comeptition, and therefore the strict rules of the WCPF defining "natural history" do not apply.
- A six of a kind competition. Six prints or slides on a common theme.
- Members "knock out" cup. Slides voted for by members present on the night in a knock out format.
- Close up competition. Slides of a subject taken from a close up or macro viewpoint.
- "Eight shot" - Format as revised in 2005. Members take a disposable camera and have a list of 8 subjects to have a go at over the summer. Members judge the best 8 at one of the early winter season meetings.
- Humour cup. The print or slide selected the most humourous on the night.
- Summer Outings Cup. (Currently awarded to winner of 8 shot competition)
- An annual competition at the season end. Entries displayed in our Annual Public Exhibition. See set subjects
- The WDPS has few competition limitations. Howver in all competitions the following applies:-
- The image shown must have been taken by the entrant
- The use of fractals is banned in line with Western Counties Photgraphic Federation rules.

NB Blocked content - A known fault has been discovered when testing against the Intermet Explorer 7 (Beta) - the email link generator uses Java code and this is not always allowed to run. This is the only Active X coding on the site, the script code is harmless and it is safe to permit IE to run this blocked content.
The 2008 AGM reintroduced categories to the Monthly Leaguie competition. The topics will be listed in the annual winter programme listing against the appropriate date/round.
The Annual "Set Subject" Competition title is based on the eye-spy principle of something beginning with the letter ?" and the letter replacing ? increments by one annually. For 2008/9 the set subject will be "Something beginning with "D” . Tip - Chosen subject must obviously express something begining with the letter D to the judge and therefore not be too abstract a connection. Examples suggested include dog(s), dustbin(s), a diamond pattern and concepts such as dereliction.
